Civil War Veteran

Early on Saturday morning last, occurred the death of Mr. David L. Smith, a life-long resident of Valois. For more than two years, Mr. Smith has been suffering from the long, slowly wasting illness which he has born most patiently. He was 72 years of age, and one of the last of a large family of brothers and sisters, most of whom he has seen taken from him. For many years he was a member of the M.E. Church, and a staunch member upon whom a church soon learns to lean. Highly respected as a citizen, thoroughly loved as a neighbor and adviser. Mr. Smith's death is deeply deplored, but considering the suffering he underwent, even those nearest and dearest to him cannot wish him back. Having been one of the faithful soldiers in the 141st regiment of the Civil War, he was closely connected with the G.A.R., and will be sadly missed by that organization. The immediate family to mourn their loss is a wife, a daughter, Mrs. Alva Updike, of Logan, and two sons, Vance and Louis, both of this place. The funeral was held at the house on Monday at 1 p.m., the Rev. A. L. Densmore, pastor of the M.E. Church officiating. The remains were interred in the Valois Cemetery, undertaker Cole of Watkins being in charge.
