Ray Sumner

ENOREE, SC-- Russell Ray Sumner, 81, of 1 Waldrop Street, passed away Friday, February 28, 2008 at the residence.
A native of Spartanburg County, he was born August 5, 1926 to the late Russell Burns and Pearl Waddle Sumner. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Enoree where he was a former deacon and deacon emeritus, a former Sunday School Teacher and was former chairman of the property committee. He was Executive Director of Helping Hands Ministries in Woodruff for 14 years, a member of Enoree Masonic Lodge #222, was a Hejaz Shriner and was a World War II Army Veteran serving in Japan. He was a retired salesman with NCH Corp. and had work for 36 years with Inman Mills Riverdale Plant serving as a supervisor in the supply room the last 8 years. Mr. Sumner was in charge of the voting precinct in Enoree and named Citizen of the Year in 2002 and was an avid bowler as long as his health permitted.
Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel Lancaster Sumner of the home; a wonderful daughter and special son-in-law, Kaye Sumner Simmons and Terry of Enoree; one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Betty Sumner of Enoree; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Loree and Charles James of Easley and Elizabeth Whitmore of Duncan; two grand-daughters, Kerri McAlister and her husband Anthony of Moore, Kristen Hunter and her husband Rev. Brian M. Hunter of Tallahassee, FL; three great-grandchildren, Chloe Rae Hunter, Molly Elizabeth McAlister and Brock Steven Hunter; one step-great-grandson; Dillan McAlister. He was pre-deceased by one brother, Robert Hagan Sumner and a brother-in-law, James E. Whitmore.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Lanford Funeral Home in Woodruff.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Enoree conducted by Rev. Brian M. Hunter, Rev. Steven Owensby and Rev. Jimmy Skinner. Interment will follow in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens.

The family is at the residence, 1 Waldrop Street, Enoree.
