William was the son of William and Elizabeth Bugbee.

William was a member of the 3rd Mass Light Battery, attached to the 22nd Mass Vols. He survived the Civil War, mustering out in 1864.

He was killed at Fort Phil Kearny in Dakota Territory, now part of Nebraska, in a battle with three tribes of Indians. There were no survivors.

April, 1867, his military pension was granted to his mother, Elizabeth.
