Louis Henry Behnken, 76, died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 1989, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Wilson funeral Home in Steeleville, with burial in Cutler Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today and until 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Behnken was a retired operating engineer. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Post Oak and Operating Engineers Local 520 in Belleville. He was born June 3, 1912, in Perry County to Henry and Eleanora (Dierks) Behnken.
He married Lela Byrd on September 6, 1940. She died in 1969. He married Stella Bigham on November 27, 1971. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Meredith Stephens of Bloommgton and Maria Berge of Belleville; two stepsons, Raymond Bigham of Kerrville, Texas, and Eugene Bigham of Sparta; two stepdaughters, Gertrude Gerlach of Percy and Mary Gerlach of Willisville; one brother, Carl Behnken of Prairie du Rocher; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Three brothers, five sisters and one grandchild also preceded him in death.
