Two June Shooting Victims Die From Injuries
Dated: 09/18/2006 10:11:39 PM

Two Toledo residents shot in two separate crimes in June are now the city's latest homicide victims.

22 year-old Jerome Saxton died in the hospital on Sunday afternoon. He had been hospitalized since June 5th when he was shot in the 1400 block of Lincoln Avenue during what police say was a gang related attack.

22 year-old Antione Tuggle is charged with Saxton's murder. He had been out of jail on bond for felonious assault for allegedly shooting Saxton. The charges were upgraded Monday.

Saxton Murder Leading to Retaliation?
Dated: 09/19/2006 10:26:06 PM

Last Sunday Jerome Saxton died from his injuries, and Antoine Tuggle was charged with the murder. However, instead of getting a sense of closure from the arrest, the family of Saxton is now worried it could lead to more shootings and more deaths.

After Tuggle was arrested Sunday night his mother's house was shot up, and that's what has Saxton's family and city leaders of Toledo scared that this murder could spark a gang war.

"It's just me and him and now I'm just by myself," said a tearful Shevella Pettaway, Saxton's sister. "It's hard because he was such a loving person."

Pettaway says the time has come to speak out and remind people of Saxton's good qualities, and how he wouldn't want more people to be hurt or killed in retaliation for his June 5, 2006, murder on Lincoln Street in Central Toledo. It's a scary scenario even city leaders fear could get worse.

"We don't need retaliation and this has to stop now before it evolves into a war of retaliation that will hurt or kill innocent people," said Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, (D) Toledo.

The mayor is asking for peace, and so is a family that wants to mourn the loss of Jerome Saxton without worrying about whether other people's lives are in danger.

"The things people may be doing out there now thinking it will bring Jerome back or it's gonna solve a situation... it's not gonna solve anything because it's just gonna make matters worse," said Carla Glover, Saxton's aunt. "We want peace, we want peace, this family here wants peace."

If you know of any retaliation attacks that might have happened or that are being planned you need to call police at (419) 255-1111. Meanwhile, Jerome Saxton's family is trying to make funeral arrangements, but they need financial help. If you would like to give money to the "Jerome Saxton Memorial Fund" you can donate money to Fifth Third Bank.
