Married Marinda Black on December 23, 1858. William and Marinda had 10 children: John M., Mary E. (Mollie), W. Chalmers, James C., Edward Henderson, Margaret J. (Maggie), Charles Franklin, George Lewis, Henry Gilbert (Gid), and Lora Abagail Faubion.
William was a farmer and soon after he married, he and Marinda moved to Burnet County with her parents and settled in the Strickland Community near Black's Fort. After about two years, they returned to Williamson County where William joined the Confederate Army. William enlisted as a private in Company D, Sixteenth Texas Infantry and served in the Trans-Mississippi Department until surrender. He took part in the battles of Milliken's Bend, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and in Bank's expedition on the Red River.
When William returned after the war, he and Marinda purchased their first farm land from R. C. Thaxton on the Bagdad Prairie. In 1878 he purchased additional land from his father to complete his homestead--owning over 500 acres north of Leander.
