Mrs. Belle McCumber, 97, died at her home in Cisne early Friday morning. She had been in failing health several months.

Rosetta Belle, daughter of Henry and Rebecca Yoho, was born in Wayne county August 16, 1862. She grew to womanhood and spent her life in and near the vicinity of her birth in Johnsonville-Cisne area.

Mrs. McCumber was a charter member of the Cisne Woman's Club and held membership for more than 40 years. She was also a member of the Fairfield Inez Rebecah Lodge and used to be regular in her attendance coming to Fairfield on the old B & O passenger train.

She was married to Hiram Asa McCumber of Dry Fork vicinity, Feb. 19, 1880, with three children born to this union. A daughter, Clara, died in infancy, Mr. McCumber died October 10, 1936.

Surviving are her son, Julius; a daughter, Nora Kutch; ten grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. McCumber reared two grandchildren, Phyllis and Betty Ruth.

Mrs. McCumber served as Cisne correspondent to the Wayne County Press for over 70 years. In fact she was reputed to be the oldest rural correspondent for a newspaper in the United States.

In an interview with the Press editor once she said, "I started collecting items for the Press when I was 20 years old. I used a horse and buggy to get around the neighborhood to call on those who would give me news. We didn't have telephones. Many times I would write my items at night and walk to the post office to mail them so they wouldn't be late.:

Funeral services were conducted from the Crippin Funeral Home with burial in the Cisne Cemetery.
