When Floyd Edward Van-Scoy was born on February 2, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, his father, Floyd Adams (Van-Scoy--adopted name), was 21 and his mother, Bertha, was 20. Mr. Van-Scoy had an older brother, Larry David Van-Scoy. Floyd and Larry had three half-brothers and three-half sisters when their mother remarried after the untimely death of their father from a mining accident.

He married Dorothy Ann Clelland (Van-Scoy) on November 8, 1955, in Peru, Indiana. They had seven children in 13 years: Floyd Van-Scoy, Jr., John Robert Van-Scoy, Kim Van-Scoy, Steve Van-Scoy, Tara Van-Scoy, Scott Ramone "Travis Adams" Van-Scoy, and John Gerald Van-Scoy (1969-1969).

He retired from the railroad and moved with his family to Mesa, Arizonia in 2001.
He died on February 22, 2016, in Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 78 at his home due to prostate and colon cancer.

Per his request, his ashes were scattered with his wife's among the trees in the Redwood Forest in California.
