SALINE, Mich. - Elaine S. Edwards, 93, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Saline Evangelical Home in Saline, Mich.
Elaine was born on Aug. 28, 1922, in Dennis, Mass., one of three children to Ernest A. and Geneva R. (Small) Cash. She attended Dennis schools and enjoyed her work with the area 4-H Club. She was a graduate of Yarmouth High School (class of 1940) where she was a class officer and National Honor Society member.
During World War II, she served her country by working for the American Fireworks Co. in Randolph, Mass. She married Roger G. Edwards Jr. in November of 1944 and they were able to celebrate 67 years of marriage before his passing in 2011.
After the war Elaine worked as a secretary at the Dennis Town Hall and at the American Metallic Fabric Co. She was an active member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church, singing in the choir and running Sunday school for the children for many years. After raising her two children, she returned to work, first at Bass River Savings Bank and later at Cape Cod Co-operative Bank. She loved being able to flex her administrative and financial acumen again and enjoyed the friendships she made with her co-workers.
She loved social gatherings and all the planning that they required. She was the skillful treasurer/secretary for many mid-Cape social clubs in the 1950s-'60s and she took on a similar role as family organizer, accountant, and communicator. Her beautiful penmanship and regular cards and notes were cherished by those who received them over the years. She was proud of being a "native" Cape Codder and with her family's past with the sea. Always ready for a walk on the beach, she loved being outdoors, watching the birds, feeling the breezes and enjoying the beauty in the small things around her. She maintained that joy up to her passing.
Survivors include her children, Robert (Lydia Lake) Edwards of Lenox, Mass., and Susan (Stephen) McDowell of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a beloved sister, Edith Andrews; and her nephews, nieces and grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial contributions in Elaine’s name may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Burial will take place at Ancient Way Cemetery in Yarmouthport, Mass., at a later date.
