August 29, 1923 ~ March 3, 2016
Milton R. Nelson passed away peacefully with family at his side at age 92. He was born to Albert and Mary Nelson in Hockinson, Washington where he grew up on a farm homesteaded by his grandfather.
In 1942, he registered for the draft, but was given a farm deferment and assigned as a Ground Observer for the U.S. Army Air Forces IV Fighter Command.
Milton's lifelong interest in sports began at age ten, listening to ball games on the radio. As a teenager, he built his own "Field of Dreams" on their family farm. He found a large round rock for shot put, lined up prune boxes for hurdles, and set up for pole vault and high jump events. Milton was also an accomplished roller skater at Battle Ground Lake near Battle Ground, Washington.
Milton married his wife, Helen, in 1951. He worked at Boise Cascade in Vancouver, Washington for 39 years, and he participated in politics, representing his union co-workers at the State Legislature in Olympia, Washington.
He was a courteous and honest man, but not afraid to express his opinion and wrote numerous editorials published in The Columbian.
Milton volunteered as a CYO coach at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Vancouver, Washington for ten years. In 1992, his 8th grade basketball team won the CYO Championship game and he was selected as Coach of the Year.
Milton and Helen celebrated 65 years of marriage on February 1, 2016. Together they raised five children, and he was very proud of his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend and will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Barbara (Dale) Jutila, Marilyn Nelson, Kathleen (Terry) Baxter, and Robert (Afton) Nelson; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Nelson; brothers, Bill and Fred; and sisters, Miriam, Helen, Mae, Gertrude, and Elsie.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 4723 NW Franklin St. in Vancouver, Washington followed by a luncheon. The burial was held at Mother Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Vancouver, Washington.
