Gail was born July 25, 1939, in Stokes County. She was the youngest of eleven children to the late Chester Carl and Ersie Bennett Smith. Gail was a loving wife, mama, memaw, sister, aunt and dear friend to many. She was strong, caring, hardworking, outgoing, talented, smart and funny. Gail was the first female member of the Lions Club organization in Stokes County, as well as the first female president of the Walnut Cove Lions Club. She was a member of Forest Chapel United Methodist Church where she spent many years singing alto in the adult quartet and choir, and playing softball. She loved sports especially: baseball, Nascar, board games, reading, crossword and word search puzzles, playing Rook, bowling, gardening, singing and socializing. A 2:00pm funeral service will be held Monday, March 14, 2016, at Burroughs Chapel, with Pastor Clifford Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory of Walkertown. Gail is survived by her loving caregiver and husband of sixty years: Milton Hawkins of the home, her children: Doug Hawkins (Dorothy Knight) of Reidsville, Connie Hawkins of Walnut Cove, and Susan Smith (Rayvon) of Walnut Cove, her grandchildren: April Paszkiewicz of Angier, Shane Smith and wife Carter of Wake Forest and Ryan Smith (Logan Parsons) of Walnut Cove, and her precious newborn great grandson: Cason Riley Smith, of Wake Forest. The family will receive friends from 6:308:30pm Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Burroughs Funeral Home, and other times at the home of her daughter Susan. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the staffs of North Pointe Assisted Living of Mayodan (Memory Care) and Walnut Cove Healthcare for the excellent care you provided.
