On April 7, 1836, Susan A. Carter married 'William M. Huston' in Morgan County, Illinois. William was born about 1801 in Kentucky. Children of William and Susan listed on the 1850 U. S. Census of Cass County, Illinois were Martha, Mary, John, and Thomas. About 1852, the family moved to Missouri where son, Joseph J. Houston, was born in 1854. By 1857, Wm M. Houston shows up on the voter rolls of Nemaha County, Kansas.
This family is listed in the 1860 U. S. Federal Census of Valley, Nemaha County with Post Office called Seneca: William M. Houston (60 yo farmer b KY); 'Sam' (forty year old female laborer b IN); Elizabeth J. (17 yo b IL); Melvina (9 yo b IL); Joseph J. (6 yo b MO); and May (3 mo b KY). The 'Elizabeth J.' listed was probably a niece of William M. Houston and the daughter of John W. and Mary Jane (Houston) Hancock, who were living nearby. In 1850, Elizabeth was listed as the child John and Mary Hancock in the Census of Cass County, Illinois. Since May age 2, was born in Kentucky where a sister of Elizabeth's was born in 1858, May could be the daughter of Elizabeth J. Hancock. In later State of Kansas Censuses, Susan and son Joseph, were listed as moving from Missouri to Kansas - not from Kentucky.
This Houston family moved to Lexington Township in Johnson County, Kansas and son Francis M. Houston was born about 1864.
Daughter Melvina Houston who had been born in Illinois about 1851, married Owen Benjamin Walker on Oct. 3, 1867 in Holt Co., Missouri, and later moved to Oregon.
