A son of Irish immigrants, Matthew Byron lived his entire life in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Around 1892 (age 20) he married Elizabeth Eckert from Pittston, Pennsylvania. He first appear with her in the 1900 census, age 26 with their 3 children, Catherine(6), Patrick(3) and Mary(1). Matthew was recorded as working in a blast furnace.

By the 1910 census his family had grown to 5 children however only 3 were living with him. His eldest daughter Catherine(16) had just married and young son Matthew had died in 1907 at age 5. In this census he is recorded as a labourer age 35 with his wife and children Patrick(13), Mary(11), Elizabeth(5) and Joseph(2).

At the time of the 1920 census Matthew, now 45, is recorded with his wife and children, Elizabeth(16), Joseph(13) and Jacob(9). Also living with him was his eldest daughter Catherine(27) who was recently widowed with her two children Paul(6) and Matthew(2). Since 1910, son Patrick had married in 1916 and daughter Mary married in 1917 and were no longer at home.

In the 1930 census Matthew is now 55 with his wife and two sons, Joseph(22) and Jacob(19). Daughters Catherine remarried in 1920 and Elizabeth married in 1923. Joseph married in 1926 so it is unknown why he isn't recorded with his wife.

Finally in the 1940 census Matthew at age 65 is with his wife and son Jacob(29). Also recorded living with him is granddaughter Gloria Neuls(3) who's mother, Elizabeth, died in 1936.

Matthew Byron was 87 years old at the time of his death in 1959.
