Andrew Johnson Payne was born February 21, 1915 in Jackson, Tennessee to Albert Marx and Sallie Viana Denson Payne.
He left home at an early age with a friend and joined the CCC Camp. He didn't last long until he called his Dad and ask if he could come back home. After he had been home awhile, he told about catching a freight train and almost fell under the wheels. His friend caught him and pulled him up, saving his life.
When he was dating one of his girl friends she gave him a banana cream pie. He always said he was going to sleep with a piece of pie under his pillow. He loved to dance and He and his sister Betty would go to the White City Ballroom dancing almost every week. He would sing, "I Went To See My Girl One Day Giving It Something Like This", and then he would shine his shoes.
Andrew and his brother Arthur went to Alabama to help run their Dad's farm and they wouldtake turns doing the cooking. If one of them complained about the other's cooking, then he had to be the cook for both turns.
While in Alabama Andrew met Lula Hayes. They were married August 18, 1935 in Ogden, Weber, Utah.
They lived in Clinton, Utah for a while and contracted beets. One day on his brother Arthur's birthday, after just finishing dinner, Arthur stretched out on the floor and went to sleep. Andrew and two other brothers decided to play a trick on him, so they put him in the ditch for his birthday. Arthur got so mad he threw a bucket of water on them and got it all over Lula's living room. She was a good sport about it and just laughed at him.
Andrew and Lula had three children, Joyce, Coleman, and Linda. After living in Hooper, Utah for awhile then went back to Alabama.
When they returned to Utah they lived on thirteenth street in Ogden. Andrew worked at the Defense Depot Ogden when Linda was born.
He enjoyed fishing in Bear River.
In the evenings after supper each night Andrew would walk to the store (Herman Payne's Market) and buy an ice cream before going to bed.
He loved to play checkers and visit with family.
Eventually the family moved back to Alabama. Andrew went into the Ministry and became a Reverend, (Pastor of his church).
He was a loving husband and father and was proud of his new granddaughter. He passed away May 10, 1964 in Jacksonville, Alabama
