Etta Baker's music will live on in the hearts of those who heard her play for as long as the Blues endure. She began playing guitar at age three. Although she did not become a professional musician until after the death of her husband Lee Harry Baker in 1967, she was known to have influenced musicians such as Bob Dylan and Taj Mahal by her rhythmic, free-flowing style. She will best be remembered in the music world for her "One Dime Blues". She often played along with her sister, the late Cora Phillips.

Two of her recordings are on the album Traditional Music of the Southern Appalachians. Another release was an album made with guitarist Taj Mahal. Her most recent recording was Carolina Breakdown.

Etta Baker was the oldest child of Madison Boone Reid and Sally Scott Reid of Collettsville, North Carolina. She and her husband had nine children including son Pfc. David Baker who died in 1967. She is also survived by 70 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and a number of other relatives.
