Lenora Fossen was born September 25th, 1932 in Maddock, ND to Anton and Julia (Fryar) Fossen. She grew up on the family farm southwest of Maddock, the youngest of five girls. She attended the Arne Township school and BCATS in Maddock and was baptized and confirmed at the Fairview Church, southwest of Maddock. She worked for Ansel Hawkness at the Hawkness store in Maddock.
Lenora met her future husband, Don Newman, one evening at a street dance in Hamberg, ND and they were married July 24th, 1955 at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Fessenden. She and Donald were together for almost 46 years until his passing in March of 2001. They raised five children together on their farm northeast of Fessenden. The majority of Lenora's life was devoted to her firstborn, a son named Danny, who was born with Down Syndrome. Lenora took care of Danny for almost sixty years until a year ago when she was no longer able to due to health reasons.
Lenora will be remembered for her strikingly good looks as a young lady and her commitment to her family. Lenora loved having coffee with her friends and baking and cooking. She had an amazing talent for playing piano completely by ear She never took music lessons and taught herself to play.
Lenora’s family would like to thank everyone at LHGS for the exceptional care she was given this past year. She formed some special friendships with the staff and she will be missed.
She is survived by her five children, Danny Newman, New Rockford, Laurie Newman James and Jason Newman, both Bismarck, Julie Newman, Mandan, and Jeff (Carla) Newman, rural Fessenden; four grandchildren; and one sister; Delores Walters, Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
