E. Elwood Powers, 92, a 66-year resident of Spokane, passed away July 14 following a short illness. Born March 30, 1919 in Oliver Springs, TN, he was the oldest of three children born to Arthur and Esther Powers. Like their father, who was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, all three Powers children followed his path to the university.
There, Elwood excelled as both a student and two-sport athlete. He lettered in basketball and played football for the legendary coach Gen. Robert Reese Neyland. Following graduation, he entered military service as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a B-17 pilot stationed in England, he flew 25 combat missions over Nazi Germany.
Returning from Europe, he came to Spokane to complete another important mission begun two years earlier. During pilot training in Moses Lake in 1943, he met his future wife, Dorothy Rochon, a reporter with The Spokesman-Review. The coupled married in 1945 and celebrated their 65th anniversary last November.
Elwood's professional career was spent in the steel industry, where he held a series of management positions. Upon retirement, he was a regional manager for Portland-based ESCO Corp., a manufacturer of specially designed products used in structural, aerospace and other industrial applications.
Outside of work, he became a near scratch golfer whose favorite lunch hours were those on the driving range.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Powers of Spokane, and several nieces and nephews in Tennessee.
A memorial service is scheduled Friday, July 22, 11 a.m., at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th, Spokane.
