Donald K. Deardorff was born Jan. 26, 1926 in Seattle, WA to parents Ralph and Mary Deardorff. He obtained a B.A. in physics from Reed College and was hired by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Albany Oregon. He described his most important accomplishment as the determination of the melting point of hafnium and its solid-state crystal structure transformation temperature.

His wife, Shirley Deardorff, preceded him in death. They had many adventures camping, fishing, hiking, and most importantly rock hunting. Don was very accomplished at lapidary work and produced many cabochons, spheres, and pyramids, which he gave to friends and family.

He is survived by daughters Mollie Bonson, Linda Young, Marcie Wolf, Pushpa Devi, and son Jess Deardorff.

The family will hold private services.
