Michael Cantlon Expires In Butte At Age of Ninety

BUTTE, Mont. May 17 - (UP) - Michael Cantlon's feeble flicker of life which had been slowly dwindling the past few days, finally went out early today.

The 90-year-old pioneer and ex-chief of police of Salt Lake, had been ill for a week. Almost from the first it was realized there was no hope.

Sixty-nine years ago, Cantlon, a vigorous young Irishman, was stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah, as a member of the United States Thirteenth cavalry. In 1869 he was transferred to Fort Benton, Mont., and later returned to Fort Douglas. During his army service he served in several Indian campaigns.

Following his discharge, young Cantlon obtained a job as patrolman in Salt Lake - it was at the time when the Mormon regime was at its height. He worked himself up through the ranks to chief of police, a position he held until 1896.

In the meantime Cantlon had married Miss Emma Grow, daughter of Henry Grow, prominent Mormon architect.

In 1898 Cantlon came to Butte, where he was first employed by Marcus Daly as a race track marshal and later operated a saloon for years.

The nonagenarian is survived by five sons and one daughter. The body will be interred in Salt Lake alongside the grave of his wife.
