CHAMBERSBURG -- Joseph A. Adams Jr., 80, a resident of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, and formerly of 314 Parkwood Drive, died Thursday evening, Feb. 13, 2003, in Menno Haven.

Born June 27, 1922, in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Joseph A. Sr. and Bessie Mae Eckenrode Adams.

A 1940 graduate of Chambersburg High School, he served more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1964 as a chief master sergeant. Then, for seven years, he was a production manager at the former Stanley Co., Chambersburg.

After retiring in 1971, he was a sales associate until 1983 with Ausherman Brothers Realtors, Chambersburg.

He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years prior to his career with the Air Force.

A life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, he was a member of Hume-McNeil Byers Post 224 AMVETS and George Washington Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 143 and a former member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 842, all in Chambersburg.

For 25 years, he volunteered with Meals On Wheels, Chambersburg, and for a number of years assisted the elderly with income tax preparation.

Before living at Parkwood Drive, he and his wife, Vesta M. Jones Adams, whom he married April 3, 1947, lived on a small farm in Fayetteville, where he enjoyed working outdoors.

In addition to his wife, surviving are three daughters, Josephine A. (Mrs. David) Rhodes of Clear Spring, Md., Mary Lou (Mrs. William) Vandrew of Marion and Kathleen M. (Mrs. Bruce J.) Neighbers of Chambersburg; a son, Joseph A. III of Panama City, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, David C. of Louisville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James E. and Paul H.; a sister, Julia M. Adams; and a son, Samuel R.

Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road. The Rev. Paul B. Baker and Chaplain Vernon D. Isner will officiate. A Masonic service will be conducted by members of F&AM Lodge 143 before the service.

Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg, with a military graveside service by members of VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.

There will be no viewing, but friends will be received one hour before the service in the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
