Swedish princess and a Duchess Consort of Holstein-Gottorp, the eldest child of King Charles XI of Sweden Queen Ulrica Eleanor. Wittelsbach Dynasty. Also known as Sofia or Sofia (without Hedwig). She was heir presumptive to the Swedish throne until her death and regent of the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp for her minor son from 1702 to 1708. After her death and the death of her brother King Carl XII, her son was bypassed as her sister Ulrica Eleanor claimed the throne for herself. She had been very close to her brother, and when he was notified of her death during a military campaign abroad, it was the only time he was ever seen to weep. Hedwig Sophia was the paternal grandmother of Emperor Peter III of Russia.
