He married Sarah Angeline Crouse on May 23, 1865. They had 5 children: Robert Franklin, Walter E, Minnie B, Thomas J, and Sarah C.

He was a Civil War soldier. Burgess resided in Davidson County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Company I (Lexington Wild Cats), 14th North Carolina infantry in Davidson County at the age of 20 on May 14, 1861. He mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on September 12, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 25, 1862. He was present or accounted for until wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia on or about July 1, 1862. He rejoined the company in January-February 1863 and was present or accounted for through August 1864. He was reduced to ranks prior to April 9, 1865 when he was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Burgess and Sara Strange had a daughter named Florence Lulu Strange that wasn't listed. She was born May 06, 1884, Davidson County, NC, died Aug 27 1972 in Archdale NC. She married Benjamin Thomas English March 03 1910. Florence's youngest daughter Marjorie passed away yesterday at the age of 91.

Thomas Jefferson Strange, born 1877:
"At 14 years old shot and killed his stepfather Alexander Tysinger at Coggins mine in Montgomery county, NC for abusing his mother. "Lexington Dispatch Jan 7, 1891: At Coggins mine, in Montgomery county Jenerson strange, a boy about fourteen years of age, shot and killed his step-father, Alexander Tysinger, who lived in Silver Hill township, Davidson county. The boy was defending his mother from his step-father's abuse." (submitted by K.English)
