Rebecca Burton was born 18 May 1793 in Dirtcar, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England to John Burton. On 2 December 1811 in Guiseley, Yorkshire, England, she married John D Burlend. In September 1831, the family family, except for his eldest son and daughter, boarded the ship called “Home” in Liverpool, England to sail to America. They arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana in early 1832. They would make their way up the Mississippi River and the Illinois River landing in Pike Co., Illinois. They settled near Detroit, Pike Co., Illinois. To John and Rebecca were born 14 children: Edward Burton, Mary Hall, Maria, Jane, Anne, John, Hannah, Stephen, Charlotte, Sarah, Harriet, William and two unnamed children. Rebecca returned home to England once. At that time, she told her eldest son, Edward about the voyage and settling in America. Edward would have the book published in 1848 as “ A True Picture of Emigration”. Rebecca died 31 January 1872 in Pike Co., Illinois. She is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Newburg, Pike Co., Illinois.
