Sara Jean (Hutchings) Maxwell of Hacienda Heights, CA, departed this earth on September 16, 2006, after a prolonged struggle with lung disease.

Born in Schenectady, NY, on April 7, 1937 to John Henry and Virginia Ross Hutchings, Sara spent much of her life in Geneva, IL, before moving to Hacienda Heights in 1966.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by Bob, her husband of 40 years; by two daughters, Virginia (Mark) Larson of Mercer Island, WA, and Jeanette Maxwell of Kirkland, WA; by two grandchildren, Luke and Mallory Larson; by a sister Phebe (Stan) Lee of Colorado Springs, CO; by nephews and niece, Craig (Susan) Lee of Walnut Creek, CA, Scott (Elizabeth) Lee of Manhattan, MT, and Melissa (Dale) Hortik of Colorado Springs, CO; by numerous great-nieces and -nephews; and by two aunts, Jean Ross Moravec of Baltimore, MD, and Sara Hutchings Maust of Santa Barbara, CA.

Sara pursued her education at Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA, graduating in 1955. She attended Mills College, then the University of Arizona, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and married her first husband, Henry Duncan Edmiston of Kansas City. A daughter, Virginia, was born to this union in 1958.

After her divorce, Sara returned to Illinois and, on November 26, 1965, married childhood friend Robert William Maxwell. They made their home in southern California where Bob managed heavy equipment sales for International Harvester and Dresser Industries. Their daughter, Jeanette, was born in 1967.

Sara was an enthusiastic homemaker, designing and overseeing the building of their present house. She was an avid gardener, lover of music, and accomplished pianist, and shared an interest in rare automobiles with her husband. As Girl Scout Area Cookie Chairman and Campfire Candy Chairman, Sara enjoyed supporting her daughters' activities. In California, she and Bob made La Habra Hills Presbyterian Church their church home were she was active in Women of the World as Bible study co-leader, secretary and audio recorder, and Fabulous Friends. She also served Christian Women's Club of Fullerton, as book chairman, treasurer, and greeter. Sara's women friends and the Christian community were a source of great joy in her life.

Sara died in her beloved home and is now with her Lord. The family extends special thanks to her church, and the staff and volunteers of Citrus Valley Hospice, for the loving attention shown to her during these last, difficult months.
