Ted Alfred Owens, age 75, of Rome, GA, passed away at his home Thursday, April 10, 2014.

Mr. Owens was born in Burlington, NC, on February 27, 1939. He was the son of the late Richard H. Owens and the late Edna Reece Owens.

He graduated from North Carolina State with a degree in Pulp and Paper Engineering and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1963. He began his career working for what is now Georgia-Pacific in Palatka, FL, and then for Gilman Paper in St. Mary's. He came to Rome in 1980 to be the Vice President of Wood Operations with Georgia Kraft.

In 1986, they moved to Texas for Ted to be manager of the Orange, TX, Inland Paper Mill. After three years they moved to Indianapolis, IN, where Ted was Executive Vice President of Inland's Paper Mill Division, responsible for eight mills and 3,000 employees. Mr. Owens retired from Temple-Inland in 2001.

The Owenses have been back in Rome for 12 years. Ted was a deacon at First Baptist Church and served on numerous church committees. Ted had been active with Habitat for Humanity and was a financial counselor.

Ted and his wife Joanne enjoyed traveling and have been to 65 countries, including an International trip with each grandchild.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Joanne Allen Owens of Rome; three daughters, Susan Moore and her husband, Bill of Houston, TX, Sharon Persons and her husband, Doug of Chesapeake, VA and Jennie Cook and her husband, Chris of Rome. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; Jonathan, Rachel and Rebecca Moore, Matthew, Griffin, Sydney, Molly and Madeline Persons. He also leaves behind one sister, Judy Williams and brother-in-law, Glenn Williams of Lenoir City, TN.

A memorial service was held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11:30 AM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joel Snider officiating. The family received friends at the church on Monday from 10 AM until the funeral hour.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Mr. Owen's memory to the FBC of Rome Foundation, First Baptist Church 100 E. 4th Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
