James Demaree

Knoxville, TN

James Edward Demaree, age 88, went home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2016. A well-loved and much respected man, Jim will always be remembered for his faith, love of family and giving of his time and talents to others. Born in Lebanon, Indiana, he graduated from school and committed himself to the U.S. Navy, where he served both actively and in the reserves and received a victory medal. He then became an aerospace engineer with the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement. He was awarded the U.S. Air Force Civilian Service Award for his participation in obtaining the patent for the life-saving Helium Augmented Smoke Generator. He also received the Meritorious Service Award from the Dept of Transportation for his hard work. A past Master of Masonic Lodge in Indiana, Jim eventually went on to receive his 50 year anniversary pin. His dedication to the Boy Scouts of America earned him numerous awards: District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, Scouter of the Year, Commissioners Arrowhead, GOD and Family Award, Fourth Bead Woodbadge Training, but he was most proud of the mentoring he provided to the scouts. He was also a faithful member of Clapps Chapel United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Margaret (Shera) Demaree; and sister, Margaret Rohn. Jim is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Thelma B. Demaree; sons, James Ray Demaree, Duane Demaree and wife Pamela, Richard Demaree and wife Carolyn; daughter, Teresa Goldschmitt and husband Eric; grandchildren, Jill, Dillon, Elisabeth, Caroline, Jackson, and Harris; sister, Mary Catherine Miller; and many extended family and friends he loved.

The family will be receiving friends at Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 11th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Funeral will begin at 7:00 p.m., with Rev Bill Akers officiating. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, March 12th at 11:00 a.m., with military honors. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Clapps Chapel UMC, 7420 Clapps Chapel Road, Corryton, TN 37721, or Tennova Healthcare Auxiliary Fund, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37938.
