Sechrist, Vera Mae (Allen)

Known to her husband as "Lady" and affectionately known by many as Mom-ma. Vera was welcomed home by her heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 27, 2012 at her home. Vera was born on June 17, 1926 to Fred and Lena (Olin) Allen. She left behind her loving family and friends knowing that one day all believers will be reunited. Vera was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church (now known as United Baptist which worships at Trinity Episcopal). As a member she served faithfully as a Deaconess, Church Clerk, Sunday School Teacher, Pastoral Relations Committee member and was President of the American Baptist Women's Missions Board. She was a witness for Jesus, demonstrating His love through visiting shut-ins, the hospitalized, and those in Nursing Facilities for many years. She also coordinated and participated in rummage sales that benefited those in need from the Southside community. Those proceeds were then utilized to support the American Baptist Women's White Cross Mission. During WWII, Vera worked at the Eclipse and Remington Rand. She will also be remembered for her devotion to providing quality child care for many of her grandchildren and the children of family friends. The children knew that at Mom-ma's home they would find good food made with love. Vera was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Ronald "Duke" Sechrist; daughter, Jyvette Sechrist; brothers, Fred, Jack and Gene Allen; sisters, Evelyn Meyers and Mary Titsworth; sister-in-law, Carol June Bodine.
A Celebration of Vera's Life will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by memorial service at 5 p.m., with Pastor David Daniels officiating, at Trinity Episcopal Church at 304 N. Main St., Elmira, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Vera can be made to American Baptist Women's Ministries at P.O. Box 851, Valley Forge, PA 19482-0851. Interment will be held in Fitzsimmons Cemetery in Southport at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the James D. Barrett Funeral Home.
