Enlisted on 10/25/1861 at Camp Hobson, KY as a Private.
On 12/30/1861 he mustered into "F" Co. KY 13th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 1/12/1865 at Louisville, KY
-----------------

Rev. James French was a son of Daniel French, b. 1792 who came to Kentucky from Virginia. His mother's name was Martha, b. 1805.

From the book, LINCOLNS BIRTH COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR, by Ed Benningfield: JAMES FRENCH is listed as a Civil War soldier in Ben Jones book, "The Kentucky Legend". He was born on July 7, 1845, and he lived in the Otter Creek area. Jones described James as a red-headed, tobacco chewing Baptist preacher that helped build and then preached in the Salt Lick basin in a log church.
James enrolled in the Union Army at Camp Hobson on October 25, 1861. He was a private in Company F, 13th Ky. Infantry. He was wounded in the battle of Shiloh according to Ben Jones, who knew James personally. James was apparently captured and spent some time in the Andersonville prison. He gave Jones an interesting account of a miracle that took place there. He said their water was a slimy ditch through one corner of the compound and if you drank it without boiling it, you got very sick. One night a storm raged across Georgia, lightening struck the ground and there burst forth a flowing well of pure water. That was the first water some had to drink for days. Jones said, that the old story telling preacher said it is still flowing today. Ben had this further to say about James French, he had an unhappy home life and he stopped over at our house often. He had a voice that would be a record breaker today if he had it on tape, he was a good singer.

James was mustered out at Louisville on January 12, 1865. He was the son of Daniel French of Taylor County. James purchased land in LaRue County on Otter Creek in 1889. He apparently lived in LaRue County for over thirty years, till he died on April 25, 1921. He is buried in the Levelwoods Methodist Church cemetery.
