Elizabeth Ann Carneal was born 28 March 1854 in Hopkins County, Kentucky to parents Fleming Patrick and Martha Agnes (Woodson) Carneal. She had one sister Nancy "Nannie" Temperance (Carneal) Overfield. Her mother died in 1861 and the sisters were partially raised by maternal grandparents Samuel H. and Lucinda P. Woodson. On 6 May 1862, her father Fleming Patrick Carneal married Catherine F. Livingston. She had five half siblings from that union: James W, Roland G, Marion Walker, Mary Alice and Minnie.

On 1 March 1881, in Dixon, Kentucky, she married Samuel J Adams, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Norvell (Melton) Adams. They had seven known children: Charles, Dellar May, Annie, Lizzie, Hugh, Elnora and Alma.

Per the 1910 census, Bettie was divorced and lived in her son-in-law's, Andrew Jackson Tirey, household with her daughter Dellar May (Adams) Tirey and grandchildren: Joe, Vera and Delbert.

Bettie died at age 94 in Providence, KY and was buried in Union Cemetery.
