He was the second son of Lieutenant Colonel F. T. Atcherley, 30th Foot. Richard was articled to Messrs. Burton, Hart, Yates and Burton, of Lincoln's Inn Field; also to Sir John Hollans and Co. He began practice as a solicitor in Arundel Street, Strand. In 1903 he relinquished his legal practice and moved to Chester. He interested himself in the management of the Marton Estate, Shropshire, and the Cymmeau Estate, Flintshire which were the property of his niece Miss Muriel Atcherley, which had been in the possession of the family for a long time. He married Caroline Wynne Ffoulkes at St Oswalds in September 1892. He died at his residence 6 Stanley Place, Chester, aged 42 yrs. He was buried on the 11th October 1909.
