Lillie married Hugh ‘Jack’ Murphy, who predeceased her in 1984. Lillie and Jack enjoyed entertaining friends and family, travelling together and playing pinochle with friends. Even those “to-do list” weekend projects were fun for the nieces & nephew who came to help out their beloved Aunt Mae & Uncle Jack; because a day of hard-work would be rewarded with fair pay: good food, lots of laughter and perhaps a rambunctious game of Monopoly. It was this work-life balance that Lillie always maintained which made spending time at her house so precious.
Lillie joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA and was Baptized by Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. Lillie joined various churches in New Jersey and Florida as she moved throughout her lifetime.
As previously mentioned, Lillie enjoyed playing games with her family and often won. Her eye-hand coordination, skillfulness and coordination in games from badminton to billiards to pinball was remarkable. She often times had a new game ready to for us to play together – but Sequence quickly became our family favorite. Lillie was an avid cross-word puzzle solver and she finished them in record time. Lillie was also an armchair watcher of Wheel-of-Fortune and Jeopardy; she often knew the answers before the contestants on television did. Throughout life, Lillie demonstrated exceptional intelligence and abilities.
Lillie adored her nieces and nephews. Some of the “adventures” that they shared included riding with her around Franklin Township while she mastered driving a manual shift car. Taking Ricky, her beloved German Shepherd puppy, for walks before he went to obedience school – which involved lots of running in random directions. Lillie often embarked on taking her little nieces and nephew to NYC to see the Ringling Brothers Circus, travelling by train alone with them – a brave woman indeed! Later in life, amusement parks became the destination of choice and she was always eager to experience the next ride! Lillie was also an avid cook & baker. She was well-known for her delicious potato salad, pound cake and cheesecakes. Really without a doubt, Lillie was the most wonderful wife, hostess, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, aunt, workmate and cousin that anyone could hope to have. She will be missed dearly.
