3. Joseph Godfrey (1806-1880)

Mary Reeves was born to James Reeves and Eunice Manning Reeves on 6 August 1820 in West Newark, New Jersey. She was the second born of ten children.

In 1840 Mary married George Coleman and her older sister, Anne Eliza, married Joseph Godfrey. George and Joseph had been friends for quite some time before they became acquainted with the sisters. They had worked as sailors together and had enlisted in the English army in Canada for a term. Sometime after that, they worked for the Reeves family on their farm.

After marrying, the two families became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In late 1843 or early 1844, the couples moved to Booneville, Illinois and later to Nauvoo, Illinois where Mary gave birth to her first child, Moroni Coleman on 31 May 1844. When the Mormans were forced to leave Nauvoo, the two couples headed west and settled in Illinois. The Morman Battalion was organized in July 1846. It was a volunteer unit of over 500 men that served during the Mexican American War. The Battalion was mustered into service as part of the Army of the West under General George Kearney. Coleman joined the Morman Battalion and left Mary and their son, Moroni, in the care of his friend Joseph Godfrey.

Mary and her son traveled to Utah with Ann Eliza and Joseph Godfrey in the David Wood Company. Mary never saw George again. It was reported that he fell ill between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Pueblo, Colorado. He was left behind to recover. When his unit returned for him, it was reported that he had died. His resting place has not been found.

Arriving in Utah in October 1852, Joseph and Ann Eliza settled in North Ogden. Mary and her son, Moroni, went to live with her sister Matilda Reeves Bates (FAG # 100149) in Tooele, Utah.

On 20 December 1852, she married and became the second wife of Judson Tolman. They later divorced on 26 January 1857. No known children were born to this union.

Mary's sister, Ann Eliza Godfrey, passed away 7 Jan 1857 a week after giving birth to her eighth child. Joseph sent for Mary and her son to help with the care of Ann Eliza's children. On 7 Mar 1857 Mary became the second wife of Joseph Godfrey. That same day, he married a third wife, Sarah Ann Price. Together Mary and Sarah raised Ann Eliza's children and also bore several more children to Joseph Godfrey. Mary had four children with Joseph. Mary Ellen (1858-1938), Martha Ann (1860-1940), and David Reeves (1869-1942). Her son, Samuel, was born March 9, 1863 and died 5 days later.

Mary and lived in North Ogden with Joseph and Sarah Ann and her married son Moroni and his wife Jemimia Price Coleman (sister to Sarah Ann Price) until she received an inheritance from her family. At that time, she purchased a small home of her own approximately 3 blocks from the Godfrey home and moved with her two daughters. Her sons David and Samuel were born in that home. All records indicate the children from both women were very close and spent a lot of time together and with their father Joseph.

Mary passed away on 3 March 1883 and is buried in Park Valley, Utah.
