Matthew "Mike", Barrett completed 94 years of life on Saturday morning in Niceville, Florida, with his loving family by his side. His bravery, strength and independence were a source of inspiration for all who knew him.
Mr. Barrett was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to Matthew Michael Barrett, Sr., and Louise Callahan Barrett on January 18, 1922. He grew strong and helped his family through the Great Depression with many odd jobs though only a teenager himself. When he was 19, he joined the Navy to serve his country in World War II. After a year, he transferred to the Army and became a rifleman with the infantry and served under General George Patton in Germany. After returning home, he married Dorothy Lois Jones on February 21, 1947, in Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from Huntingdon College in 1949 and went on to pursue his graduate studies. Mike & "Dot" had four children before, sadly, he lost her to cancer in 1960. He was blessed to cross paths again with an old acquaintance, the sister of a fellow baseball player, Helen Cain, who had loved him from afar years earlier. After a brief courtship, she married him and took his four children to raise as her own. His job as a Systems Mathematician at Eglin AFB led them to Niceville, Florida, where she immediately joined First Baptist Church and began training the children "in the ways they should go." Mike and Helen often enjoyed The Panhandle Opry, where Mr. Barrett's favorite song was the "Orange Blossom Special." After retiring, he ran Barrett's Saw Sharpening and helped many of the local contractors keep their tools in prime shape during the construction boom, as well as, crafting wooden stools and toys for his grandchildren. After over fifty years of marriage, Helen preceded Mr. Barrett in death on November 26, 2014, at the age of 89" He was able to thrive afterwards only through the tender and watchful eyes of his family, his dog, Sam, and many caregivers who helped this very independent man find meaning in his life again. Thanks, especially, to Kirstin and Brad Beckham, who became a part of the family, as well as, dear Comfort Keepers who were often in his home assisting with meals and housework, Peggi Bivens, who kept him well-groomed with in-home haircuts, and Dr. Anastatio, Nurse Whitney, Dr. Katzenstein, Nurse Judy, and the staff at Twin Cities Hospital, all who represent excellence in medical care. The family would like to extend a special appreciation to Father Stephen Voyt of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, who administered the last Anointing of the Sick Sacrament.
Mr. Barrett is survived by his sister, Mae Foster of Thousand Oaks, California, his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca "Becky" and Rick Wilson of Montgomery, Alabama, his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Barrett of Madison county, Mississippi and his younger son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Launa Barrett of Conroe, Texas; as well as, eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, living in Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama. His nieces and nephews extend to California and South Carolina. On Monday, March 7, 20l6, at 2:30 pm Reverend Brad Beckham officiated the services for Mr. Barrett at Sunset Cemetery, Valparaiso, Florida, with military honors being conducted by the U.S. Army.
