Ellen Eugenia Magevney was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 20, 1871. She was the daughter of Michael Magevney , Sr. (1815 – 1887) born in Sessiagh, Fermanaugh, Ireland and his third wife Elizabeth Rose O'Driscoll born in Philadelphia.

Michael Magevney, Sr. and his family immigrated from Ireland to St. John, New Bruswick, Canda in the late 1830's, then moved on to Boston and finally arriving in Memphis, Tennessee about 1844.

Magevney was a very successful Memphis businessman and devout Catholic who was married three times. His marriages produced two Ursuline nuns, Ellen and Catherine (Ellen's half-sister) and Ellen's half-brother Confederate military leader, Colonel Michael Magevney, Jr.

Ellen lived with her parents at 179 Carroll Ave. in Memphis until about 1885, when her parents enrolled her as a student at the Ursuline Literary Institute at the Ursuline Convent in St. Martin, Ohio.

Michael Magevney, Sr. was a long-time strong supporter of the Brown County Ursuline Convent and School. In June 1886 the convent completed their Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. The donations to the chapel was reported at the time by the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette.

"The windows are entitled as follows, the title describing the figure and symbolism: 'The Sacred Heart of Jesus,' donated by Mr. and Mrs. George Roberg, of Cincinnati ; 'The Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mr. Michael Magevney, of Memphis, Tennessee ; ' St. Joseph,' Mrs. Kane and family of Dublin, Ireland ; ' The Angel Guardian,' Mr. Michael Collins, New York ; ' St. Ursula,' in memory of John Boyle, of Fayetteville ; ' St. Charles Borromeo,' Mr. Lawrence Dunn, of Tynemouth, England ; '.St. Augustine,' Mrs. Augustine Ford ; ' Una,' of the Commercial ; ' St. Angela Merici,' in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Slevin, of St. Louis. The window in the visitors' Chapel is also a beautiful one, Cincinnati work, donated by Mr. D. Foley, of Cincinnati, ' in memory of his wife. 'The interior windows of the sanctuary are also Cincinnati work, one, the donation of Mr. James Walsh, of Covington.

The woodwork of the ceiling, with its fretted arches, is marvelously beautiful. The organ is a very fine one, of Philadelphia make, purchased through the generosity of Mr. Michael Magevney, of Memphis, Tennessee, and does away with the organ casing, the pipes being ornamented in tints corresponding to the ornamentation of the chapel."

Michael Magevney, Sr. died shortly thereafter in April 1887. Ellen's mother Elizabeth Rose remarried in 1890 to William Timothy Sullivan in Memphis.

Ellen remained as a student in St. Martin. The book Fifty Years in Brown County Convent chronicled the May 1890 Ursuline Literary Institute's High School Graduation: "honors were conferred on Miss Ellen Magevney, Memphis, Tennessee."

After her graduation she returned to Memphis for several years before confirming that she had a religious vocation. It wasn't until 1897 when Ellen returned to St. Martins and entered the Ursuline convent as a Postulate.

The following year she received the Ursuline robes and the Novice White Veil and assumed the religious name of Sister Mary Angela. Two years later in early 1990 she professed her final religious vows.

Following the dreams of many of the Brown County Ursulines the convent had opened a day school in Cincinnati in 1896. They staffed the day school with Ursuline teachers and lay sisters from the St. Martin Convent. "The Ursulines held the first day of classes on September 16 and because the motherhouse in Brown County did not have a telephone, the nuns there waited anxiously waiting for a telegraph bringing news of success or failure. With hearts full of gratitude, they read the telegram that was sent: 'Opened with forty pupils. Deo Gratias." (Ursuline Academy Website)

Among the teachers sent from St. Martin to Cincinnati was Sister Mary Angela Magevney who was probably sent there to teach while a Novice before she professed her final vows in 1900. The 1900 census reported her as a teacher at the Ursuline day school. The day school would evolve into the Ursuline Acdemy in 1910, but by then Sister Mary Angela had returned to the Brown County Ursulines to teach at the Ursuline Literary Institute in St. Martin.

In June 1908 Sister Mary Angela's half-sister Catherine Magevney, Sister Borgia, died at the Ursuline Convent in St. Martin and is buried in the Ursuline Cemetery on the Convent grounds.

In 1913 Sister Mary Angela's mother's 2nd Husband William Sullivan died in Memphis. Sometime thereafter Elizabeth Rose O'Driscoll Magevney Sullivan relocated to St. Martin near the Ursuline Convent. She lived there until her death in 1936 and is buried in the Ursuline cemetery on the convent grounds near her daughter.

Sister Mary Angela Magevney lived and taught at the Ursuline Convent and School in St. Martin, Ohio until her death on 1 July 1960.
