MORRISTOWN - Carolyn Z. Payne Scruggs, 78, died Sunday morning at the home of a daughter and caregiver, Patricia Flagg and her

husband, Leon, in Bulls Gap.
She was born May 7, 1928, in Greene County and was a daughter of the late Taylor H. and Mary Edna Arnett Payne. She was the widow of James E. Scruggs, her husband of 48 years.


Mrs. Scruggs retired from the Head Start Program in Greeneville.


Her family noted, "She was very active with her church, Divine Temple of Greeneville, where she served as church 'Mother.' She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, sharing with others, and volunteering in her community."


Survivors, in addition to a daughter and son-in-law, include eight other children and their spouses: Marilyn Scruggs, Nancy Kyle, and Linda and Pierce Garrett, all of Morristown, Debra and Mark Stewart, and Bobby and Roxann Scruggs, all of Greeneville, Danny Scruggs of Bulls Gap, Melvin and Debbie Scruggs of Jackson, and Thomas and Ruthie Scruggs of Dunkirk, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one sister: Frances Huffaker of Marion, Ind.; one brother: William Payne of Chuckey; a "devoted" niece: Ruth Parkey of Greeneville; her special aunt: Bea Arnett of Greeneville; a special cousin: John Melvin Tedford of California; and numerous other "devoted" relatives and friends, including special friends: Patricia Everhart, Bob Ball, Josephine and David Moore, Charles Reed, Lula Mae "Snook" Garrett, Hildred Harris, Kima, Olivia, and Shorty Bean, and Maritta and Clarence James.


She was preceded in death by two sons: James Alvin Scruggs and Jimmy Leonard Scruggs; one grandchild; and three sisters: Mary Johnnie Payne, Edith Watterson and Irene Thompson.


The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today at Dockery Funeral Chapel, 111 E. Third South St., Morristown, and other times at the homes of Nancy Kyle, 2638 Keystone Drive, Morristown, and Patricia Flagg, 400 Scruggs Lane, Bulls Gap.


The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at Mount Olive Baptist Church on Pope Road.


Interment will follow in Hamblen Memory Gardens.
