Farm estate owner. He was originally from the Nils farm, which was in his father's family. His mother was from the Näktergal farm (Swedish for Nightingale) and the family adopted that farm name after his parents' marriage. He was an important man of his day in the village of Gimsbärke, Amsberg parish, Borlänge; the largest landowner in the village and a ranking citizen of honor. It was told of him that he once wanted to boast to the county sheriff about the size of his estate. "I have twelve acres of land and six cows, that makes two cows to an acre, ain't 'at a proper piece o' addin', aye, Mr. Officer?" He was a god-fearing man and was among the first to participate in the religious movements when they began in the 1850s-1860s, and the traveling folk preachers would have a safe haven at his place when disseminating their publications. The people of the village used to see him at his window, how he regularly would sit there reading an edifying book. It was evening time, and the local kids thought he would sit like that just to demonstrate how god-fearing he was to people passing by on the road. It is not easy to determine the facts about it, but some people even claimed he really couldn't read at all and at times would have the Bible upside down. After all, he had been around in the days of conflict and change when it was punishable to gather round the reading of the Word of God, and when it was not modern to venture outside the framework of the established church. ~ His great-grandson, Olle Hedberg, retold this little biography, in 1988. Hedberg, now 93, joined over 100 of his descendants, from Sweden and several locations in Denmark, Norway and the United States, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death in 1993, in Borlänge.
