Katherine MacGregor, Veteran Montana Nurse, Dies Here

Miss Katherine Jean MacGregor, 87, lifetime member of the Dillon American Legion Post and a Montana nurse for many years, died early this morning at 706 Cannon, where she had resided for the past three months.

Miss MacGregor was born Aug. 5, 1866, in St. Elmo, Ontario, Canada. She was a public school nurse and nurse at the State Normal school in Dillon for 32 years. She had lived with her sister, Mrs. J. A. McMillan, in Butte since her retirement four years ago.

A nursing sister in the British army during the early years of World War I, Miss MacGregor served in England, France and Malta until the United States entered the war, when she joined the Red Cross nursing service.

Prior to World War I, she had been superintendent of the old Murray hospital in Butte for many years and had served as superintendent of nurses in a hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif.

She received her nurses' training at Michael Reese hospital in Chicago and in Columbus, Ohio. One of the first women members of the American Legion, she was a lifetime member of the Dillon post. She was a longtime member of Montana State Nurses' association. Other affiliations included Mizpah chapter of Order of Eastern Star and the Dillon Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her sister, Mrs. MacMillan in Butte; a niece, Agnes MacGregor; a nephew, Gregor M. MacMillan of Helena; a grandnephew, John MacMillan, who is attending the University of Washington, and several nieces and nephews in Ontario.

Funeral services will be conducted in Dillon at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with graveside rites by members of the Dillon American Legion post at the Dillon Cemetery.

Retz funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
