Seaman Apprentice John Anthony Winkler was born on August 22, 1943 and was in the U.S. Navy, arriving in Vietnam assigned to the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), Task Force 77 (TF-77), 7th Fleet.

On November 22, 1965 SA John A. Winkler was assigned a mess cooking detail on the USS Bon Homme Richard and was seen in the mess cook berthing compartment at 2000 hours that evening. At 0630 hours on November 23, 1965 SA Winkler failed to report at the morning muster and his reported absence was inadvertently overlooked by his supervisors until 1030 hours on November 24, 1965. When a thorough search on the ship was commenced, the search was conducted by the ship's investigator until 1900 hours that evening without success. An air search by the ship's aircraft commenced at 1815 hours on November 25, 1965 along the track of the ship since SA Winkler was last seen. All search efforts failed to locate him. The loss occurred in the South China Sea approximately 85 nautical miles from the coast of South Vietnam. The body of SA John Winkler was not recovered.
