LARRY NORMAN ASHTON HIGHLAND, IN
Larry Norman Ashton, age 86 of Highland, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, October 29, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie (Heskett) Ashton; daughters: Kathleen Allard and Nancy Ashton; granddaughters: Carrie Yannuzzi and Emily (Patrick) Edger; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents: Chester and Irene Ashton; and sister, Vivian Zellers. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Solan Pruzin Funeral Home with Rev. Laura Reason of Highland First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, Schererville. Visitation will be Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at the Solan-Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave. (SW corner of Kennedy and Main Street), Schererville, IN. A Masonic Lodge service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Larry was a retired Roll Shop Foreman at Inland Steel where he worked for 41 years. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Larry participated in battles on the Marrshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and finally, Iwo Jima where he was severely wounded. He belonged to Highland American Legion Post 180. In the 1950's and 1960's, Larry was the Building Commissioner of Highland and a volunteer police officer. He was also active in the Masonic Lodge #686 and served as Worshipful Master in 1954. Larry enjoyed fishing throughout his life and in later years was an avid wood worker.
