obituary Mrs C W Friend, Western Star, Coldwater, KS
The funeral services of Mrs C. W. Friend, who died in Ashland on May 8, were held in the Assembly of God church in Coldwater on Thursday, May 9, 1935.
Mrs Ferrell Guizlo and Mrs Martin Zerby sang two beautiful selections, " God Will Take Care of You" and "Sometime You'll Understand", at the beginning of the service. At the close, they sang, "Good Night Here and Good Morning up There".
Mrs O L Ring was in charge of the service. She was assisted by Rev L D Doss, pastor of the local assembly. Mrs Ring brought a very helpful and comforting message on the subject of a rose. She told how when a rose unfolded it gladdened the hearts of those near by, and when it closed, how the loss was felt. Burial was in Crown Hill cemetery. The following obituary was read during the service;
Elma Bowen Friend was born in Harrison county, Mo, on July 4, 1882, and departed this life on May 8, 1935, at the age of 52 years, 10 months and 4 days. When she was one year old, she came with her parents, Mrs and Mrs J N Bowen, to Kansas, settling in Kingman county, where she lived when she was united in marriage with Chas W Friend on October 14, 1900.
In 1905, Mr and Mrs Friend moved to the Coy neighborhood, where they made their home until Mr Friend's death on December 6, 1929. Mrs Friend and her children continued to make their home there until the time of Mrs Friend's death.
To this union were born four children; Chester Willard, Nobel Russell, Elma Gladys and Cecil Brooks, all of the Coy neighborhood, except Nobel, who lives north-west of Coldwater. She is survived by six grandchildren; Delsie Dove and Lois Lee Vanderhule and Russell Jean, Emma May, Bernard Nobel, and Charlie Dick Friend; four sisters, Mrs Margaret Eastman of Wilmont, Mrs Cora Kuehn of Nashville, Mrs Belle Eastman of Winfield, and Mrs Eva Pope of Coldwater, and by many other relatives and a host of friends.
Mrs Friend was converted about 11 years ago and continued to live a true and faithful Christian life. She put her membership in the Pentecostal church at Pike in 1934, remaining faithful to the duties of her church. She was always ready to help in the upbuilding of God's kingdom.
She was not well during the last 21 years of her life. During the last two or three months, she steadily grew worse. During all the years she was a patient sufferer. never complaining, and always helping those who needed her in spite of her feeble strength. Her neighbors and friends have often been heard to say " She never said an unkind word about anyone, and never repeated things which would hurt anyone".
She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always thinking first of the comfort of her children, always lastly of herself. She was patient and kind to those who needed her, even at the last.
"Dearest mother, thou has left us and our loss we deeply feel. It is God who hast bereft us, He will all our sorrow heal."
