Gordon K. Jenkins, 88, of Charleston, died peacefully at Hubbard Hospice House on March 4, 2016.He was born in Charleston on September 16, 1927, the elder son of the late Lawrence F. and Vonya L. Jenkins. He attended public schools in Charleston and was a 1945 graduate of Charleston High School. After graduation, he served in the Armed Services. He attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., and Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston).Mr. Jenkins retired in 1989 from Bell Atlantic, now Frontier Communications, with 41 years of service. At his retirement, he was Operations Manager of Exchange Carrier Relations and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.He was a 45-year member of the South Charleston Lions Club, serving as President and Zone Chairman of Lions District 29-0. He was a member of Christ Church United Methodist for 53 years and served the church as a member of the Administrative Board and in the office of the Business Manager.He was preceded in death by Carolyn R. Jenkins, his wife of 54 years.Left to cherish his memory are sons, Stephen R. Jenkins of Charleston, Thomas A. Jenkins and wife, Stephanie of Los Angeles, Calif.; granddaughters, Jennifer Bailey and husband, Josh, Lauren Kirk and husband, Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Madaline, Grant, Gabrielle, Mason and Audrey Bailey, and Annabelle Kirk; brother, Larry K. Jenkins and wife, Phyllis of Durham, N.C.; brother-in-law, Robert T. Reed of Oceanside, Ore.Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wed. March 9, in the Centrum at Christ Church United Methodist, Charleston with Rev. Dr. Jay Parkins and Rev. Steve Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in South Charleston.Friends and family may gather from 5 to 7 p.m. Tues. March 8, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston.The family offers its sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Thomas Memorial Hospital for their excellent care with special recognition to the staff at the Thomas Oncology Center, and to the staff of Hubbard Hospice House for making his last days so peaceful and calm.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com.
