Matthew Kutnerian Albrecht, beloved son of Karyn Kutnerian and Robin Albrecht, was tragically killed in a single car accident on March 4, 2016, in Molalla, Oregon. The driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Douglas Bonham, who had been Matthew's mentor since April of 2010, was also killed. Matthew's light shone incredibly bright to all that knew him, both here in Bellingham and at his home in Oregon, where he was a Junior attending Silverton High School, living on farm with his mother and sister. Matthew had a larger-than-life personality, coupled with a tremendous sense of humor, as well as a heart the size of Texas. His generosity and sensitivity to others in need grew in strength over his all too brief life here on earth. Matthew loved his friends and family with intensity and passion, always standing up to defend the people he cared about to anyone he felt threatened their well-being. His protective nature included kids he believed were having difficulty "fitting in", befriending and encouraging them at every opportunity, most likely because he was once like them, and remembered the pain from his own personal journey. Because of his outgoing personality and incredible gift to help lift others up, Matthew transcended the normal cliques one finds in public high schools. As a result, Matthew touched so many lives that his funeral had to be held at the Silverton High School Auditorium to accommodate the over 500 people in attendance. In his personal life, Matthew epitomized the 12th man, and was a HUGE Seattle Seahawks fan. His favorite players were Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman. His room, his beloved 1985 Ford F150 pickup truck "Frank", our whole house, and Matthew's body were always adorned with Seahawk colors and gear 24/7, 365 days a year, something he proudly displayed on the streets of San Francisco last summer daring anyone to question his loyalty to the best NFL team EVER. Matthew also loved his country with every fiber of his being, and what wasn't covered in Seahawk colors was covered in red, white, and blue. He hoped one day to serve the country he loved so much by becoming a United States Marine. Matthew was the quintessential athlete, involved in every sport available to him from the time he was allowed to play T-ball in 2005, until he was engaged in four or five sports throughout the school year: T-ball gave way to baseball, he started wrestling in 2007, added Pop-Warner football in 2009, basketball in 2010, track in 2013 & 2014. His grandfather, Dr. Karl K. Kutnerian of Bellingham, was there to watch Matthew not only hit his first triple in a weekend tournament, but also a grand slam in 2010; Matthew was MVP for the 2013 basketball season in addition to setting a track sprint record that year that still stands at his school, in honor of his mom's battle with breast cancer. Ultimately wrestling was his passion, and on February 20, 2016, Matthew placed 6th overall in District Varsity Wrestling Championships in Oregon, and set his sights on placing 4th at State in 2017. Matthew was also his mother's favorite horseback riding "buddy", and he was quite talented at that as well. Matthew also had a tremendous feel for music and played the piano until his passing; Matthew's grandmother, Evelyn James Albrecht of Bellingham, taught him how to pull a bow across her cello, and from there a love of being part of a musical group was born. He picked up the Alto Sax in 4th grade and joined the band. Matthew played jazz solos at area rest homes in Silverton to entertain older residents as well as playing throughout high school as a member of the coveted Jazz Wind Ensemble group that placed 4th at the 5A State Wind Ensemble Championships in 2015. But as enthusiastically active in life as Matthew was, he was serious about his studies because he was very excited about attending college in the near future. He had been attending college fairs, prepping for his SAT's, and hoped to become an Engineer before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. At the time of his death, Matthew had just finished the previous term with a solid 4.0 which included five college level classes, bringing his overall GPA to 3.81. Matthew leaves behind his mother, Karyn L. Kutnerian, and older sister Amy Margaret Albrecht of Monitor, Oregon; father Robin K. Albrecht of Portland, Oregon; grandfather Dr. Karl K. Kutnerian of Bellingham, and grandmother Evelyn James Albrecht, also of Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Matthew's name to his Memorial Fund @ GoFundMe or to Matthew's favorite charity, Seahawk QB Russell Wilson's Why Not You Foundation. Also, please do visit Matthew's Memorial Website and leave a tribute, sharing your memories/photos of our most precious son, for when we read what you have written, a little bit of light seeps through what will be a very dark world for us for quite some time to come: http://matthew-kutnerian-albrecht.forevermissed.com/
