Henry's father and mother - Gerhard and Mary Marie came with their five children in 1837. His oldest brother Fred came to America in 1830 to escape being called up to the Army. Henry was eight years old when he came to America.
The family first settled in Richmond, Indiana. In April, 1843, the family settled on a farm just west of Poland, Indiana.
Henry went to school in Poland, the school lasted only three months a year.
In 1845 when Henry was sixteen years old his father, Gerhard died. He was buried on the farm, which is now the Poland Presbyterian Cemetery.
Henry and Margaret Shults gave the ground for the present Presbyterian Church and Cemetery. Later Henry and Mr. Tressel gave additional acreage for church and cemetery.
Henry and Margaret had twelve children. Three died in infancy. They also raised three orphans: Sara Roed, Fred Bender and Guy Bush.
Henry died at Friday, January 24, 1896 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Elijah Tressell ( Mary Ellen Shults). He was buried on Sunday, January 26th.
At the time of Henry Shults death, he owned nearly a thousand acres of land. He began as a poor pioneer, but was very prosperous in America.
