Martin J. Powers, age 74 of Vonore, Tennessee passed away Saturday March 5th.

He was born in Delmar, Iowa and met his wife of 52 years Janis Heneke, in kindergarten. Martin was a high honors graduate of the University of Iowa with degrees in Mathematics where he was in inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He taught math at Betterndorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa for 4 years. While at the University, he took the only course offered on computers. Alcoa Aluminum Company then hired him as a junior systems analyst, when he started at the Davenport, Iowa works. He later worked in the Massena, New York plant and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania headquarters over a career of 28 years.

He rose to be head of half of Alcoa's global computer department. After retirement he continued in the field consulting with Alcoa on special projects and moved to Rarity Bay in Vonore. There he was a part of many boards and committees in the community and pursued an avid interest in the history of the area as a member of the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable.

Martin was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Lenoir City, Tennessee and the Knights of Colombus.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Powers, mother Doris, and stepfather Clyde Shea.

He is survived by his wife Janis, three children Diane & Paul Hart of Hong Kong, Joseph and Alissa Powers of Bradenton, Florida, Jeffrey Powers of State College, Pennsylvania, sister Margo and Kent Shouse of Maquoketa, Iowa, sister-in-law Conni and Ron Barker of Penn Valley, California, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 9th with visitation at 10:00 AM and Mass at 11:00 AM.

Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Delmar, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
