George W. Ward was a farmer, teacher and surveyor with deep family roots in eastern North Carolina. He was also a soldier, serving as an officer in the 31st Regiment North Carolina Militia between 1852 and 1861 and the Third North Carolina State Troops during the Civil War.

George Washington Ward was born Aug. 12, 1832 to Alfred (1790-1869) and Elizabeth Robinson Ward (1793-1874). He was one of eight children in a family descended from some some of the earliest English settlers in the region .

He had a distinguished record in the armed forces of the Confederate States of America. According to records available in the National Archives, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1861 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg in 1862, wounded again at the battle of Payne's Farm in 1863, and wounded a third time at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House in 1864. He was named to the North Carolina Roll of Honor for meritorious military service in 1863.

He survived the war, returned to his childhood home in the Rockfish community of Duplin County (near present-day Wallace, N.C), and married Mary Priscilla Alderman in 1867.

George and Mary Ward had eight children: Mary Vance (Ward) Taylor (1868-1920), Daniel Patterson Ward (1869-1938), Myra Elizabeth (Ward) Faulkner (1871-1943), Albert James Ward (1873-1957), William Alfred Graham Ward (1875-1927), George Robert Ward (1877-1942), Preston Cummings Ward (1879-1906), and Livingston DeRosset Ward (1882-1928).

He died accidentally in 1884 while fighting a local forest fire.
