Graveside service for Floyd Stancil Bennett Sr., 85, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Forestlawn Gardens. (If inclement weather, graveside rites will be held at Gray Brown Service Mortuary.) The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Gray Brown Service Mortuary. Mr. Bennett passed away Monday at his home in Anniston. Born in Clay County, Alabama on May 19, 1930, Floyd moved with his family to Anniston. He began working as a youngster, delivering newspapers and helping his neighbors. He loved children, animals, talking to people, music and working with flowers. A friend to all who knew him, Floyd never met a stranger. He loved and was much loved by his family. A talented athlete, Floyd played football for Anniston High School Bulldogs in the 1940's and made All County 3 consecutive years and All State in 1948 and 1949 playing for the North Team at Right Guard. He also served on the Student Council. He received scholarship offers from 11 major colleges, including LSU, TN, AL, Notre Dame, Army and Ole Miss, deciding to stay close to home and play at Jacksonville State University. Floyd obtained his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from JSU. He went to work for Wiley Co. and later delivered gasoline for Pure Oil Company. He was top salesman for Union Oil Company of California, formerly Pure Oil Company. He also worked as service writer for Bentley's Auto in Anniston. He married Patricia (Pat) Cain and together they raised their family in Anniston. Some of their best family memories were hunting arrowheads and wild flowers. He was active in the Jaycees, Youth Football and Boy Scouts. Floyd was deeply devoted to his family, his friends and his community. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pat Bennett; three sons, Stan Bennett (LaNita), of Anniston, Rick Bennett (Paula), of Lexington, S.C. and Scott Bennett, of Anniston; four grandchildren who will greatly miss his story telling, generosity of spirit and his infectious laugh, Grace Repass (Jeff) of Chesapeake, VA, Heidi Bennett of Greenville, S.C., Matt Bennett (Dawn) of Moyock N.C., and Courtney Bennett of Pueblo, Colorado; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Ulis G. Bennett and Annie Belle Roberson Bennett and brother George W. "Peck" Bennett. The Family would like to thank Kim McCutcheon and Connie Thompson of Home Helpers of Jacksonville and their team of caregivers, Christina Williams, Melissa Dean, Brenda Barry and Carmella Biddle, Lorrie Robinette, Felicia Kelly, Roshon Palmore and Linda Evan; nurse Michael McElroy and other kind members of ALACARE Home Care and ALACARE Hospice for their care of Floyd and support of the Bennett family.
