A resident of San Mateo for over 50 years passed away peacefully February 8, 2016 at home with his wife and daughter by his side. He was 92. Herb was a native Californian born in Napa, CA to Emile and Helen Grand on June 16, 1923, and grew up in the San Franciso/San Jose area.

When WWII began he enlisted and served in the Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945. He shipped out of New York on his 21st birthday. Herb was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group as a radio operator. He flew out of England on a lead crew of a B-17, completing 29 missions. On his 29th mission the plane was hit, but the crew managed to make it back over enemy lines to land in friendly territory.

After the war Herb attended San Jose State and received a BA in Business. In college he met and married Jacqueline George; they had two children together, Douglas and Lucille. After 32 years of marriage Jackie passed away in 1979.

Herb worked over 40 years for the State Compensation Insurance Fund serving in various capacities including the head of Southern California claims out of Los Angeles and Investment Officer out of San Francisco. Herb met his second wife Bonita Punt at work in San Francisco; they were also married for 32 years.

Herb loved to travel; he visited every state in the USA. After retirement, he traveled worldwide with Bonita; they visited every country in Europe plus countries in Asia, North America, South America, and Africa.

He was also active in the 100th Bomb Group Foundation, attending reunions every other year to get together with members of his crew and other veterans. There are still three members alive from his original crew of ten.

Herb is survived by his loving wife; daughter; grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his faithful dog Sammy.

Herb was preceded in death by his first wife Jacqueline; his brother Robert; and his son Douglas.

Interment at Los Gatos Memorial Park will be private.
