Her obituary in the Arlington Sun Newspaper read: “Marie Mathilde (Mae) Madsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Madsen, passed away March 26, 1919, at the family home in Bangor Township, Brookings County, South Dakota, at the age of 30 years, 1 month, and 1 day. She was born in the same house Feb. 25, 1889.
Her illness was extended over a period of three years, and the past 18 months she was confined to her bed. Besides the parents there are five sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Anton Hinderaker, Astoria; Mrs. Otto Larson, Sinai; Ebba, Nora and Julia at home; Clarence, Martin, Roy. Cora, another sister, died 14 years ago.
Mae’s last words were: “Oh Lord, come, I am ready to meet you.” She was a devoted member of the Bangor Lutheran Church and ever active in the good work of the church. She was loved by all and throughout her long illness, when she suffered much; friends called nearly every day and left flowers regularly for her.
She attended high school in Arlington and later the State College in Brookings. Later she clerked in John Bonde’s store in Arlington and in Carl Johnson’s general store in Badger.
The funeral was held at the Bangor Lutheran Church Monday, March 31, 1919 at 1:00 pm. The choir from Sinai Lutheran Church sang at the service and Mrs. A. A. Royhl played the voluntary. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the history of the church. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Burial was in the church cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing relatives.
