Enlisted at Shoreham, VT, on 3 Oct 1861, as a Private in Company K. Re-enlisted on 31 Dec 1863 as a Saddler in Company C. Mustered out at Burlington, VT, on 9 Aug 1865.

Charles drowned to death in or near LeRoy, MN, on 8 Aug 1911, during a storm called "A Night of Terror" by the newspaper. He was swept away during a flash flood caused by the partial failure of "the old dam". By the end of the next day, his body had not been recovered. There is no known burial information.
