HYRUM SMITH COOMBS, son of Mark Anthony and Maria (Morgan) Coombs was born 24 November 1838 in Monticello, Illinois. He married Love Josephine Lyman 23 June 1872 in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of Amasa Mason and Maria Louisa Tanner Lyman.

At the age of 17 he came to Salt Lake City and worked as a compositor on the Deseret News and later on the Times and also the Kinsman, his longest service was with the "Tribune" under the management of P.H. Lanan, finally laying aside work through failing eye sight. He was a member of the Tribune's composing staff for 15 years.

He was a deacon at Phillips Congregational Church from its founding, was deeply devoted to the interests of the church. He was a man of rich religious life, wide reading, and superior mental power. He was strong in opinion and a passionate American, interested in the world advance of liberty. He died 27 January 1913, at Salt Lake City, Utah.
